chapter 18 activity notes- the hunger games

Jot notes:

Why Katniss has feeling for Rue:
- She reminds her of Prim
-She can talk to mockingjays like her father
-She reminds her of home
-She is innocent
-she is good at hiding/ hunting/ gathering food

How Rue helps Katniss:
- she sets the fires to draw away the career tributes so she can destroy their food
- she shows her the Tracker Jackets nest
- She helps with food
- She is company

How Katniss honors Rue when she dies:
- she places flowers around her body
- she holds her as she dies
- She sings a song to her about going to a better place
- She kills the boy who killed her

Intro:


   I am Katniss, I have not known Rue for a long time but she meant a great deal to me because she reminds me of my sister Prim, she saved my life, and helped me become a contender in the games. I will honnor her death as much as I respected her in life.

The main conflict in the novel is survival 


Example of Internal Conflict

v She struggles with her conflicting feelings about her mother.
-she wants to love her but feels her mother abandoned her when her father died and she did not take care of Prim.

v  She struggles with her conflicting feeling about Gale.
-She loves him but does not want to admit it.


v  She struggles with her feelings about volunteering for the games.
She knows she had to or Prim would die but she is afraid Prim will die anyway if she is not home to take care of her.
 
 
v  She struggles with not showing her emotions.
She has to keep her face a mask so people do not know how she feels. She hates the capitol and cannot let anyone know it or they will make her an Avox and kill her family. She is terrified of dying and cannot show it or she will appear weak.  
 
 
v  She struggles with her emotions for Peeta.
She cannot decide if he is playing a game or his feelings are genuine.
 
 
v  She struggles with guilt.
-          She feels guilty about not helping the Avox girl when she first saw her in the woods.
-          She feels guilty about not thanking Peeta years ago when he gave her bread.
-      She feels guilty about not being able to control her anger.
