Review materials:
You will need to know the following definitions:
Genre: A type or class of literary text. Fantasy, Romance and Science Fiction are types of genres. Narrator: is the speaker who tells the story.Tone: the author’s attitude towards the subject they are writing about such as anger, pride, approval, pride or pain.
Protagonist: The main character of the story.
Antagonist: the major character in the story that works against the main character.
You will need to apply the following concepts:
Point of view:
1. Innocent Eye- the story is told through the eyes of a child. His/her judgment will be different than an adult.2. First person- the story is told by the protagonist or one of the characters who closely interacts with the protagonist. The reader sees the story through this person’s eyes as he/she experiences it and only knows what he/she feels. The narrator will use pronouns such as “I.”
3. Second person- the narrator tells the story to another character using the pronoun "you." Second person is the least commonly used POV in fiction.
4. Third person- the story is told by someone who is not a character in the story. The author will use pronouns like “she” or “he.”
• Third person limited- the narrator knows only the thoughts and feelings of a single character.
• Third person omniscient – the narrator moves from character to character, has access to all their thoughts/ feelings and introduces information when and where he chooses. The narrator is omniscient like God.
Identify genre:
Types of genres:
• Fiction- a made up story• Non- fiction- story based on real life
• Romance- a work where the main theme is love.
• Fantasy – is a work where the setting is based in an alternate reality or world. ( The novel “The Hunger Games” is considered fantasy)
• Mystery- is a work where a case/ mystery is revealed or solved. • Biography- is a non –fiction work telling the story of a person’s life.
• Science Fiction- is type of fiction heavily based on science or pseudo- science.
Identify conflict:
Conflict: is essential to plot. Without conflict there is no plot. It is the opposition of forces which ties one incident to another and makes the plot move. Conflict is not merely limited to open arguments; rather it is any form of opposition that faces the main character. Within a story there may be only one central struggle or there may be one dominate struggle with many minor ones.There are two types of conflict:
1. External – a struggle with a force outside one’s self.
2. Internal – a struggle within one’s self; a person must make a decision, overcome pain, resist an urge, dealt with guilt, ect.
These types can be broken down into four kinds of conflict:
1. Man vs. Man (physical) - the leading character struggles with his/her physical strength over men, forces of nature, or animals.2. Man vs. Circumstances (classical) – the leading character struggles against fate, or the circumstances of life facing him/her.
3. Man vs. Society (social) - the leading characters struggles against ideas, practices, or customs of other people.
4. Man vs. Himself/Herself (psychological) - the leading character struggles with himself/herself; with his/her own soul. Ideas of right or wrong, physical limitations, choices ect.
